ABOUT THE MEETING: From the early days of punch card readers and IBM mainframes through the transition to personal computers and evolution into cloud powered tablets and cellphones, computers are being integrated into everything from refrigerators to airplanes. Join us as Dr. Jhz presents on the multi-faceted future of computing. Every year the Student Chapter hosts a meeting and speaker with the Cincinnati Chapter. ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Rashmi Jha is an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computing Systems Department at the University of Cincinnati. She worked as an Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Toledo, Process Integration Engineer at IBM Semiconductor Research and Development Center. She finished her Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State, and B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India. Dr Jha has more than 13 years of experience in the areas of Solid State Electronic/Nanoelectronic Device Fabrication, Electrical Characterization, Data Analysis, and Device Modeling. She has been granted 12 US patents and has authored/co-authored several publications in the areas of nanoelectronic devices.
She has been a recipient of CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2013, IBM Faculty Award in 2012, IBM Invention Achievement Award in 2007, Materials Research Society’s Graduate Student Award in 2006, Applied Materials Fellowship Award in 2005-2006, and the best student paper award nomination in IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in 2005. Her current research interests lie in the areas of Nanoelectronic Devices Enabled Future Neuromorphic Computing Systems, Resistive Random Access Memory Devices and other Emerging Memory and Logic Devices, Spintronics, Neuroscience and Cognitive Modeling, Neuroelectronics, Emerging Nanoscale Devices Enabled Cyber-Security Systems, Flexible/Invisible Logic and Memory Devices for Wearable Computing, Solid Oxide Battery Devices, and Energy Harvesting Devices.

If you think about hyperbole in national strategic initiatives, you have probably heard about 5G. The 5G narrative promises a future of ubiquitous connectivity for everything from your mobile device to self-driving vehicles, and has been lauded as a national security interest. With an expected 111% CAGR growth of market opportunities worldwide peaking at a zenith of $277 Billion by 2025, this presentation will explore the technical and business underlying concepts of 5G deployment from a network operators perspective, will explore some of the hype, and will help identify opportunities to exploit.
Special Note: This presentation will be held in conjunction with the section’s Annual Senior Member Drive. This will be an opportunity for those IEEE members wishing to elevate their grade to Senior Member to meet with a panel of Senior Members who can review their professional credentials and assist them in the application process.

Tom Simpson is the Chief Operating Officer of CBI, which is the corporate entity that holds Cincinnati Bell, CBTS, Hawaiian Telecom, and ONX Canada. ABOUT THE MEETING: Our nation spends a fortune on its military, preparing for traditional warfighting in traditional war zones. However, there is an emerging threat to the United States’ national interests that goes beyond the realm of traditional warfare, and that threat extends into space. Our entire national infrastructure depends upon availability of the resources we have in space – from GPS satellites navigating our air traffic, to Wideband Global Satcom satellites providing protected communications to our warfighters in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Our country’s national interests are intimately tied to the availability and affordability of Space assets to enable our national security. This presentation discusses the role of L3 Space and Sensors Technology Center (SSTC)’s role in defending our nation and providing affordable, rapid access to launch assets and satellite communications.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS: Dr. Robert Hayes is the Director of Advanced Programs at L3 Space Avionics in Mason, Ohio. He leads a team of principle investigators in developing the new technologies that L3 is inserting into its space portfolio. His team’s current research interests include navigation processing for launch vehicles, low cost processing options for satellites, space sensing technologies for overhead persistent infrared (OPIR) missions for missile defense, and microwave technologies to enable high bandwidth communications between space assets and ground assets.
Mr. Gordon Samuels is a Senior Principle Engineer at L3 Intelligent EO Solutions (IES) in Mason, Ohio. IES features a broad array of products ranging from baseball-sized, standard definition IR imagers to ultra large format systems with up to 36 Mpix of resolution. They are fielded on armored vehicles, tanks, fighter aircraft, UAVs, ships, submarine periscopes, foot soldiers, and satellites. IR sensors have emerged as a critical element in both offensive and defensive military and paramilitary systems and will play an increasingly important role in building and maintaining our space borne infrastructure. Mr. Samuels has a BSEE from the University of Cincinnati and an MSEE from the University of Texas at Arlington and has been an IEEE member since 1985..

ABOUT THE MEETING: Power electronics play mission critical roles in automotive, aerospace, medical, telecom and power generation/distribution/transmission applications. A hardware failure in these areas can jeopardize safety and come with serious financial consequences. Prognostic Health Management (PHM) Systems provide real-time situational awareness on the status of equipment along with their constituent components. This enables owner/operators to better anticipate the onset of failures and optimize their preventative maintenance strategies. This presentation summarizes the use of this technology in industry and discusses on-going research in the field. ABOUT THE
PRESENTER: Dr. Mark Scott is an assistant professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He teaches courses on Electronics, Power Electronics, and Electric Vehicles. His research team evaluates the design trade-offs associated with using silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) power devices in electrified transportation and renewable energy applications. The emphasis of their work is on the conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) and prognostic health management (PHM) techniques for power conversion hardware. Additionally, they explore the benefits of using wide bandgap devices in isolated DC/DC converters.

ABOUT THE MEETING:
Volunteers are lovingly and expertly are crafting new exhibits and experiences to interpret the history of the Voice of America at Bethany Relay Station. Some volunteers were part of the Bethany Station when it was operational and can relate personal stories and experiences. The Main exhibits at the Museum deal with the history of the Bethany Station and the Voice of America.
There are also two new exhibits:
Powel Crosley and the Voice of America (Made possible in part by a grant from the W. E. Smith Family Charitable Trust)
The question of why the Voice of America Bethany Relay Station was constructed on a hill top outside of Cincinnati can be answered in two words – Powel Crosley.
