ABOUT THE MEETING:  This month’s meeting consists of a tour of Duke Energy’s Envision Center Located in Erlanger, Kentucky, Duke Energy’s Envision Center provides visitors a dynamic experience that demonstrates the possibilities of modernizing to smart grid and energy efficient technology. The center features a movie-style studio with sets consisting of a substation with two-way digital technology, a smart home – complete with solar panels and a plug-in hybrid vehicle, an apartment complex with smart meters and a power delivery work center – monitoring conditions with real-time data. Electric poles equipped with intelligent power equipment are also staged throughout. Center visitors can watch video presentations that showcase a day in the life of a variety of energy customers in the year 2015. Visitors will also experience simulated demonstrations such as a thunderstorm, lightning strike and power outage. Home simulations feature the use of an energy-management system to control high efficiency appliances (e.g., dishwasher, water heater, HVAC equipment).Smart grid technology will enable:• Improved system reliability and operational efficiency• Quicker and more accurate response to outages• Greater customer offerings (e.g., energy efficiency programs and payment options)• New tools and programs that enable customers to predict and gain control of energy usage. The center also promotes the importance of renewable power to meet the energy needs of tomorrow and how customers can play an important role in helping us reduce our carbon footprint.

 ABOUT THE MEETING:

The field of High Performance Computing (HPC) is one of the foundational topics for the future of computer systems.  From embedded systems to the tablet/desktop to high end systems, parallelism will be an integral part of the future.  While, the parallel hardware is already here; the effective exploitation of it is not.  Of course some subareas are already effectively exploiting parallelism.  Some examples of these areas are: scientific computing, request level/embarrassingly parallel computing, multi-tasking, and data parallelism.  However, for the most part, the insertion of parallelism into many computational tasks remains elusive.  There are many factors complicating the exploitation of parallelism which presents us with many opportunities and challenges to overcome.  This talk will review the state of the art in parallel computing and review some of the programming challenges and strategies for harnessing parallel computing.

Philip A. Wilsey is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computing Systems at the University of Cincinnati.  He is an experimentalist working in parallel and distributed systems, embedded system, and point-of-care medical devices.

H-1B Increase on Congress’ Agenda

Legislation has passed the U.S. Senate and is pending in the U.S. House of Representatives that would roughly double the size of the H-1B temporary visa program.  If an immigration reform bill passes this year, the H-1B increase will almost certainly be part of the bill unless legislators hear from their voters soon.

The bills are part of Congress’ on-going efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform.  While most media attention has focused on issues like amnesty and boarder security, the legislation would also profoundly change high-skill immigration into the United States.

At the moment, both the House and Senate are supporting legislation that will increase the H-1B visa cap from its current 65,000 visas to around 180,000 visas annually.  Along with new and (more…)
