ABOUT THE MEETING:   Around the globe, concern is rising over the ability of autonomous and artificially intelligent systems to protect human interests. These technologies are rapidly being woven into all aspects of our daily lives, impacting the privacy of our personal information, muddying the responsibility, accountability, transparency and control of decision-making processes, and furthering unwelcome societal biases implicit in real-world training data. The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems seeks to ensure that such ethical issues are addressed at all stages of the design and use of these systems. In March 2019, the IEEE Global Initiative released the first in a series of documents, Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Well-being with Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, First Edition (EAD1e), to provide pragmatic recommendations and direction for designers and their leadership. A series of related IEEE standards (IEEE P70xx) are also in development, covering ethical design concerns such as transparency, trustworthiness, algorithmic bias, data privacy/protection for organizations, people, students and children, human control/agency, human well-being, nudging, and empathic systems. This presentation will provide an overview of the IEEE Global Initiative and a snapshot of the current state of the developing ethical standards.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:   Dr. Gregg Gunsch is a retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, an IEEE Senior Member, and a retired college professor with over twenty years of experience teaching and leading research in applied artificial intelligence and machine learning, information security for computer science/engineering majors, and digital forensic science. His formal studies also include human-machine interface design, physiological information processing, pattern recognition, and biomedical and rehabilitative engineering. His current prevailing interest area focuses on the stresses of modernity, primarily technology-induced/amplified stresses, and their impacts on emotionally-vulnerable populations such as children with autism spectrum or sensory processing disorders, the lonely elderly, and others with stress-related cognitive conditions. Dr. Gunsch is an active member of four IEEE working groups to develop standards and recommendations for using ethically-aligned design principles when building autonomous/intelligent systems: IEEE P7010, describing how to design around human well-being in measurable ways; IEEE P7008, regarding nudging and choice manipulation; IEEE P7003, tackling algorithmic bias, that pesky tendency for machine learning programs to reflect the sexist/racist behaviors found in societal training data; and IEEE P7014, involving empathic technologies that have the potential to mimic and manipulate human emotions.

WALK-INS (those without reservations): You are welcome to attend this meeting and/or enjoy the dinner even if you did not register in advance. Walk-ins pay a higher $20 dinner fee. Raffel’s determines our cost based on the number of plates used; if you choose to have dinner, please pay the fee if you eat even if you arrive late or didn’t pre-register.

PE CREDITS: Depending on the subject matter, attendance at IEEE Cincinnati Section Meetings now qualifies the attendee for Professional Development Hours towards renewal of Professional Engineers Licenses. Required documentation will be available following the meeting if qualified! The Section Meetings also provide a great opportunity to network with fellow engineers in the area.
