ABOUT THE MEETING:  
For more than two decades, the University of Cincinnati Infrastructure Institute (UCII) has been engaged in the investigation and development of nondestructive testing and evaluation methods of highway bridges based on field measurements. Truckload testing and health monitoring are two of the most common tools used in practice today.  This presentation will include results from tests and existing monitors of several major bridges, including a pair of under-deck Warren truss bridges (the Jeremiah Morrow and the Cleveland Innerbelt), cable stayed U.S. Grant in Portsmouth, and a ninety-year-old cantilever through truss in Ironton.  In addition, anecdotes from testing over sixty typical steel stringer bridges throughout the Transportation districts in Ohio will be presented. 

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Arthur Helmicki, Ph.D. is a professor and Director of the School of Electronic and Computing Systems at the University of Cincinnati where he has been employed since 1990. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering at Boston University in 1983, and his MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1988 and 1989, respectively.  From 1989 through 1990 He held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
The focus of his research and teaching have been in the core area of systems and controls, with specialization in the development and application of practical, nondestructive evaluation techniques for damage identification, system identification and parameter estimation, condition assessment, health monitoring, remote monitoring/sensing, and associated information technologies. He has worked on extensive application of these techniques in the areas of civil infrastructure, biomedicine, and aerospace systems.

Dr. Helmicki is a principle member of the University of Cincinnati Infrastructure Institute.  He has performed instrumented monitoring and diagnostic testing on more than eight dozen bridges in Ohio and surrounding states including long span, short span, concrete deck on steel girder, suspension, truss, fiber reinforced composite, and cable stayed bridges for the purposes of load and/or fatigue rating, overload evaluation, and design verification. His efforts have been supported and funded by numerous agencies including the National Science Foundation, Federal Highway Administration, Ohio Department of Transportation, and several companies.

Park in the Library garage, entrance off Martin Luther King Drive at the
bottom of the hill.  Proceed to 4th floor (main library entrance) and go
out to the plaza.  Proceed up the wide steps to Rhodes Hall.  The buildings
in that area are all connected and the 8th floor is actually the 4th or so
above the plaza level no matter which building you start with (ie: enter
the first building on the left and go from there to Rhodes).
