ABOUT THE MEETING:   Small Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicles (FW- MAVs) may be subjected to either or both of manufacturing defects or in-service damage that render their pre-designed controllers less than adequately effective. Minor damage to wings, for example, can remove the vehicle’s ability to reliably follow waypoint trails even if that same damage does not result in a catastrophic loss of altitude. In this talk, we will consider online evolutionary algorithms that adapt wing motion patterns to restore correct flight behavior during the normal conduct of flight missions.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:  John Gallagher is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cincinnati.  He received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1998 and is a senior member of the IEEE.  His publications and interests span the fields of cyber-physical systems, adaptive control of flapping-wing flight vehicles, machine learning, neuromorphic computation, and undergraduate engineering education.
